August 2, 2010: Shutdown Projects completed on time – Ajax’s Mill 1 is “rolling” again!
Two major summer shutdown projects were completed on time during our two-week annual maintenance shutdown, the weeks of July 19th & 26th. The first project was a major rebuild of the 2,500 ton press. The work included replacing the original bedplate which was a casting with a forged bedplate (see photos of the old and new bedplates). This required taking the press "down to the ground" as all major components were replaced or reworked to original condition. The second major project was a rebuild of two rotary furnaces (see photo of inside of a furnace being rebuilt), and repair to the mill's gearbox and related components.
Ajax’s maintenance crews worked 24/7 during the past two weeks in order to complete these major preventative-maintenance projects on time, and yesterday the rotary furnaces were loaded, and Mill 1 started rolling again today. During the shutdown, our Mill 2 small ring line continued to operate as did all other departments. Our current lead-times are 2-3 weeks! Thanks to all employees, subcontractors and suppliers who worked through the recent heat-wave where temperatures reached into the 100’s! Ajax is back!
